Where’s Rob?
Improv Everywhere, as their mission states, “causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places.” They’ve created some very funny moments, such as Frozen Grand Central and Food Court Musical, but Where’s Rob is one of their funniest — and most heartwarming — yet.

Since my previous venture into sports-related speculation earned me a handsome $6 profit (I later lost $5 on Albert Pujols in the Home Run Derby, bringing my all-time net earnings to $1), I had no qualms about dropping a Hamilton-Jackson double whammy on this year’s fantasy football league. Now, before my 2-0 record has a chance to be blemished, is the opportune time to share my 2009 team.
If you’re a sports fan, you’ll read this and think, “Hm, you should have known LaDainian Tomlinson was a risky first-round pick considering his age.” If you’re not a sports fan, you’ll find that this Penny Arcade comic captures your emotions quite well at this moment.

Southern Live Oak began life as “Design.Build.Learn.Repeat” with this post on August 23, 2007. Since then, visitors to the blog have arrived for a variety of reasons. Many seem to have found this post while searching for pictures of judo. On June 3, the death of David Carradine brought a surge in visitors to my review of Death Race 2000. This September, my post Deconstructing the Dome was featured on the front page of WordPress, making this Sunday the blog’s busiest day ever, with 723 views. This blog is small but growing, with 245 posts, 24,258 rejected spam comments, and one (1) gym expulsion.

‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom, and they can’t take that away. This is the ultimate disc for ultimate frisbee. It is properly thrown accompanied by the fearsome call of the bald eagle. CAAWWW! You need to buy this immediately.
The world standard for the sport of Ultimate, and the official disc of the Ultimate Players Association Championship Series. With its contoured grip and aerodynamic engineering, the Ultra-Star has set the standard for quality, consistence, and performance.
Planet Fitness Biloxi August 10, 2009

In February, I joined the Biloxi gym Planet Fitness and wrote this post mocking some of their more inane practices. Since then, going there was uneventful and boring; nobody there so much as said “Hi,” but neither did anything make my experience there awful.
Things changed when I walked in one day about two months later. After being greeted with the usual request for my gym ID number, I was told that my membership had been canceled. In fact, it had been canceled over a month earlier — on April 30 — with no notice to me. Why? The lady at the front desk could not tell me. She called the owner, but it took 15 minutes to get an answer. Finally, the reply came that my account has been canceled “in reference to some things that were said on the internet.”
Wow. Really? If that’s referring to what I wrote, it doesn’t say much for the self-esteem of the owners of this Planet Fitness that they surf the internet looking for comments about their gym and then boot any members they can identify. But it says even less about their respect for their customers that they would actually cancel my membership — without telling me — based on an old blog post. I am starting to understand their business model, though; the $60 sign-up fee is a sweet deal for them if they can cancel a membership after two months.
But guess what, Planet Fitness? That’s disrespectful to your customers. It creates an atmosphere in which they feel unwelcome and — yes — judged. This is not the only problem with Planet Fitness, as others have summed up here, here, here, here, and here. But it’s the worst: a basic refusal to treat customers with respect.
Since June, I have twice been promised that the franchise owner, John Landry, would call me back with an explanation. It has been two months and I have never heard from him, nor can anyone tell me how to reach him.
Edit (9/28/09): On Sept. 16, Mr. Landry finally called me back. He agreed to refund my sign-up fee.

I finally replaced my computer, which was stolen when our house was broken into several months ago. It’s the same as my old one, except spiffier – faster, more RAM and hard drive space, etc. The wireless card doesn’t work properly some of the time, and I haven’t figured out why.
As a bonus, the laptop came with an 8GB iPod Touch. It’s a very nice little device with a simple and intuitive design and user interface. This simplicity comes at a small cost — it lacks some obvious functions, like a chat program.
It’s good to have a computer again!

Oh… this is good. This is so good.
I just happened across The Guild, a web video series starring Felicia Day that follows a group of online gamers. Even if you’re not a gamer (I can’t claim to be), the show is hilarious and worth watching.
