1 Year in Biloxi

Meant to post this yesterday, but didn’t have internet access.

Today marks my one-year anniversary in Biloxi! On September 4th last year, I was pulling my fully loaded (and since deceased) Hyundai Accent into the parking lot of the Salvation Army Volunteer Village. One year, two cars, five-plus completed houses, 120 blog posts, and 2080 work hours later, what have I learned? What are the most memorable experiences?

  • Conquered my fear of heights.
  • Learned how to drive a stick shift.
  • Started judo. Six months so far!
  • Visited the Doo-Nanny and the Museum of Wonder in Seale, Alabama.
  • Sang along to “Wagon Wheel” at the House of Blues in New Orleans.
  • Watched Michael Phelps put up the greatest achievement in Olympic swimming history.
  • Played epic road trip games of “Infinity Questions”.
  • Experienced film epics like “Yor, Hunter from the Future”
  • Ladies’ Night at the Beau Rivage. Enough said.
  • Beach bonfires with Hands On.
  • Nick’s Birthday Bar Bike Excursion.
  • Fireworks on the beach for the 4th of July.
  • Biked 50 miles in a single trip.
  • Bitten by more fire ants than I can count.
  • Thanksgiving Refugees Dinner at the WoA House.
  • Fried Krispy Kreme donuts with homemade vanilla ice cream.
  • Learned how to build a house.
  • Two blitz builds and lots of work on Patty’s house.
  • Learned how to play Ultimate Frisbee. Missed only 2 games out of the last 52.
  • Volunteer dinner courtesy of the Food Network’s Robert Irvine.
  • Rode out Gustav in a Red Cross hurricane shelter at Stennis Space Center.
  • Learned AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Rocked out to Guitar Hero with Price and James.
  • More Salvo lunches than I want to remember.
  • Bike rides with Ian, Danae, Ingrid, and the rest.
  • Eugenia’s constant dance parties.
  • Semi-regular Spanish conversation group.
  • So much more than I can recount here.

  1. glad I made the cut…though, it should say “Eugenia’s constant dance parties and sexy ass!”

  4. Butcher a hog?! That’s terrible (see your first quote in your about me.)

No one should ever know how to do that! The fact that someone learned to butcher a hog was obviously a major glitch in our evolutionary process! It is only contributing to our devolution and leading to our demise as a species. Once we’re gone, the hogs, cows, and chickens will take over since we’ll perish from our huge misstep.

And by the way, we will perish not from health problems that arise from our antibiotic filled, corn based meats, but from the spear of the Narwhal! Narwhals are G*d’s army, and have been watching in horror for thousands of years as we heartless mureder them and their animal brethren. It is now time for Animal Liberation! As Peter Singer wrote about.

    Thank you.
