Washington v. Washington

Last weekend, I went with Jon, Jody, Sam, and Molly up to a shooting range in Brooklyn, MS to test out Jody’s Ruger and Jon’s Colt.

Jon came prepared for an afternoon of shooting guns with a t-shirt bearing this quote:

Observe good faith and justice towards all Nations; cultivate peace and harmony with all. –George Washington, Farewell Address, Sept. 19, 1796

We were alone at the range for an hour or two until two other gentlemen arrived. One had with him a small arsenal, including at least one machine gun capable of fully automatic fire, and – lo and behold – his own George Washington t-shirt. This one read:

A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government. –George Washington

Make up your mind, G-Dubs! Are you a hawk or a dove?

Interestingly, according to Wikiquote, it appears that this quote is fake. The actual quote relates to national war preparations, and reads as follows:

A free people ought not only to be armed but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well digested plan is requisite: And their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories, as tend to render them independent on others, for essential, particularly for military supplies. –George Washington, January 8, 1790, First State of the Union Address
